High School Musical' Star Corbin Bleu Doesn't Think Franchise Should Graduate To College

High School Musical' Star Corbin Bleu Doesn't Think Franchise Should Graduate To College. Corbin Bleu is growing up, and the 19-year-old is ready to move on from his role as mop-topped Chad Danforth in the popular High School Musical franchise. Even Chad is moving on, now that he'll be attending the University of Albuquerque, and Bleu isn't sure there's any reason to make High School Musical 4: The College Years.

"I don't know about the college years," he told MTV News at the junket for High School Musical 3: Senior Year, "because the spirit of HSM has always been about high school."

Bleu talked to us about one of the main aspects of the franchise: over-the-top dance numbers. The film's director, Kenny Ortega, is familiar with fancy footwork, having worked on the Dirty Dancing television series and the film Newsies. "Dance has definitely changed over the years, when you look back at Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire," Bleu said. "At that time, it was viewed upon very well, technically.

"And now, at least in more of the technical side of it, when you look at dancing, it's cool to do hip hop," he added. "I think that's what's wonderful about HSM, especially this third one. There's a lot of really masculine numbers, while still maintaining some technical stuff."

One of the more masculine numbers includes a dance sequence that takes place in a junkyard for the song, "The Boys Are Back." "[There was] so much at your fingertips. You have so much to work with," he said. "We shot that number [over] two consecutive nights into the morning, and the sun was up, so we were very fragile and dead."

Bleu has become quite the song-and-dance man, so he might be a perfect fit on the Great White Way some day. "I would love to [do a Broadway show] in the future," Bleu said enthusiastically.

But he has a few other projects in the works to keep him busy until that razzle-dazzle dream comes true. "I'm working on music. I've been in the studio," he revealed. "I'm working on producing a film with my father called Freestyle. It's about motocross."

JCPenny's and High School Musical 3

JCPenny's and High School Musical 3. Hoping to cash in on Disney's lucrative "High School Musical" franchise, JC Penney is launching the "JCPenney Best Seat in the House 'High School Musical 3' Sweepstakes."

The promotion, linking it to one of the most lucrative tween marketing franchises ever, is the latest effort in Penney's ongoing campaign to win over more sales in children's, tween, and teen clothing as it limps its way through America's enduring retail funk.

Penney already sells a wide assortment of "HSM" merchandise, aimed primarily at kids and tweens--including apparel, home décor, cosmetics, youth electronics and games. During the promotion, it will also offer free movie posters with purchase of any "HSM" merchandise. The sweepstake winner gets a red-carpet screening of the movie for the lucky winner and 100 guests, as well as a limo ride. And Penney's clothing is featured on the microsite promoting the contest.

Penney will also sponsor Radio Disney's popular feature, "On the Set," with behind-the-scenes scoops and cast interviews from the movie, including JCPenney gift cards and movie-themed merchandise giveaways. The movie is set to open in theaters Oct. 24.

Teens have also been a major focus for Penney, which launched an extensive teen marketing campaign back in July, a Breakfast Club-inspired effort showing teens how they can "get that look." That effort hyped a number of teen brands, including Decree, Fabulosity, and American Living, its partnership brand with Polo Ralph Lauren.

But so far, the results have been disappointing, as consumers clamped down on spending for apparel. Department stores like Penney have been hit hard, and it recently said that in August, its key back-to-school month, comparable store sales fell 4.9 %.
